Meet little “Mokete,” who was born in Smithfield, Virginia, the product of parents from the dwindling herd of wild horses north of Corolla. The filly’s parents were moved away to protect them and adopted by the owners of the farm were Mokete became the first “off-beach baby” of the Corolla Wild Horse Fund conservation program.
Less that 100 of the wild horses, generally believed to be descended from Spanish Mustangs, remain on the northern Outer Banks where development has been crowding them out. Many like Mokete’s parents have been adopted and Karen McCalpin of the Wild Horse Fund says they have “superior intelligence, strength, and athletic ability. Their calm and sensible nature makes them excellent riding horses” for children and adults.
