Corolla

CoastalMobile_skyscraper_

If you’re looking for seclusion, there’s nowhere better than the quiet little community of Corolla. It’s literally the end of the road—the place where Highway 12 stops and sandy dunes begin to stretch uninterrupted to the Virginia state line.

Corolla is known for pristine wide beaches, sophisticated Southern charm, and historical attractions like the Whalehead Club and the Currituck Lighthouse. Despite a year-round population of 500 people, you’ll find a wide variety of specialty shops and restaurants. Attractions include golf, miniature golf, a movie theater, off-roads tours, public boat ramps and water sports. Wildlife is also a huge attraction, and Corolla draws its share of kayakers, bikers, hikers and bird-watchers. Even though the nightlife is fairly quiet, you’ll find plenty to explore during the day.

OBXtra #1—The Banker Ponies

Walk the beaches near Corolla and you may be joined by a herd of beautiful wild horses—the legendary banker ponies of the Outer Banks. Linked to Spanish mustangs that swam ashore from shipwrecked galleons, these incredible creatures have roamed the islands for more than 400 years.
