Southern Shores
A luxurious community of large residential homes, Southern Shores stretches from the ocean to the sound. It’s a combination that’s perfect for families with young children, because they can experience both the excitement of the waves and the calmer waters of Jean Guite Bay and Currituck Sound.
There’s also plenty of space to stretch out. Located between Duck and Kitty Hawk, the beaches of Southern Shores are private and uncrowded—even on warm summer days. The town is overwhelmingly residential, but vacationers do have access to several laid-back recreation options, including walking paths, a sound-side bathing beach, a picnic area, and tennis courts. Southern Shores is also home to the Duck Woods Country Club, where you can play a round at the oldest 18-hole golf course on the Outer Banks.

If you’re looking for a restaurant, shop or house anywhere between Kitty Hawk and Hatteras, ask for the Mile Post address. Every mile along Highway 12 is marked by these posts, which number from 0 to 20. The lower the number, the further north you’ve traveled.
