The Lost Colony Outdoor Drama

CoastalMobile_skyscraper_

In 1587, the first English colony was established on the Outer Banks. Made up of approximately 120 men, women and children, this daring group would attempt to build a permanent settlement in the New World. But instead, the colonists vanished in less than three years, leaving behind only a post carved with the word ‘Croatoan’ and a mystery that still endures.

Now, ‘The Lost Colony’ is an exciting outdoor drama that merges historical events with the fictional stories of the colonists. Written in 1937 by Pulitzer prizewinning playwright Paul Green, the production is now the longest-running historical outdoor drama. More than 4 million people have seen this award-winning show, which features drama, dance and song.

OBXtra #19—The Lost Colony of Mayberry?
During its 70 years in production, ‘The Lost Colony’ has served as a launch pad for numerous acting careers. One of its most famous alums is Andy Griffith. Before he patrolled the streets of Mayberry and won cases on Matlock, Andy took to the Waterside Theatre stage as Sir Walter Raleigh.
