19TH ANNUAL MOLLIE FEARING MEMORIAL ART SHOW – CALL FOR ENTRIES – The Dare County Arts Council (DCAC) has announced a Call for Entries for the 19th Annual Mollie Fearing Memorial Art Show. The annual “Mollies” features an eclectic mix of artwork, which will be on display at the DCAC Gallery in downtown Manteo, May 1-31. ALLIGATOR RIVER AND PEA ISLAND NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – Saturday Tram Tour – April 11th – 9:00 am – noon – Meet at Creef Cut Trail parking lot (Milltail Road and HWY 64 west of Manns Harbor) – Take a trip around the refuge and learn about the wild lands and wildlife. Bring your binoculars and camera! Drinking water and insect repellent are also recommended. Dress for the weather! Tram seating is limited so please register ahead of time and pay $10 per person. OUTER BANKS HOSPITAL – Cancer Transitions: Moving Beyond Treatment (A Four Session Series) – April 12th – 4:00 – 6:00 pm – Outer Banks Hospital Education Suite, Medical Office Building, Nags Head – The Cancer Transitions program is for patients who have completed cancer treatment. The four sessions will address many of the physical, psychosocial and practical issues that patients and loved ones may face once cancer treatment is over. NATURALIZATION CEREMONY – April 16th – 3:00 pm – Wright Brothers Memorial, Kill Devil Hills – The NPS is partnering with the U.S. Customs and Immigration Service for this event as well as local and statewide schools so that students can watch and learn about the process of becoming an American citizen. The partnership helps introduce new citizens to some of the nation’s most significant natural and cultural resources. These historic and picturesque sites provide an ideal backdrop for the ceremonies. The public is welcome to attend and join in the joy of these new citizens.
FLYING PIRATE HALF MARATHON, FIRST FLIGHT 5K & DOUBLE DARE CHALLENGE – April 16th & 17th – This pirate-themed half marathon is a lot of fun! The course winds its way through the natural beauty that is North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Beginning in Kitty Hawk the course heads into Nags Head, along the Albemarle Sound, around the Wright Brothers National Memorial, and through the Nags Head Woods Maritime Forest. Finish with a Pirate Jamboree in Nags Head! The First Flight 5k is SOLD OUT! FREE ENTRANCE DAYS IN THE NATIONAL PARKS – WRIGHT BROTHERS NATIONAL MEMORIAL – April 16th – 24th – The National Park Service turns 100 years old in 2016 and we want everyone to join the party! On 16 days in 2016, all National Park Service sites that charge an entrance fee will offer free admission to everyone. The fee waiver includes entrance fees, commercial tour fees, and transportation entrance fees. Other fees such as reservation, camping, tours, concession and fees collected by third parties are not included unless stated otherwise.

FIRST COLONY FOUNDATION ARCHEOLOGICAL DIG: “PROJECT DOGWOOD” – April 17th – 23rd – Roanoke Island – The First Colony Foundation is planning an archeological dig in honor of the Centennial and the 75th anniversary of Fort Raleigh National Historical Site. The focus of the dig will be to further investigate the “Ganz Workshop” site adjacent to the earthen fort. This event will help us to gain knowledge about the park which will help to excite and engage new audiences about the Lost Colony.

KILL DEVIL HILLS HISTORIC LANDMARKS OPEN HOUSE – April 22nd – 1:00 pm – Kill Devil Hills Town Hall – The self-guided tour of a sampling of the historic homes begings with a reception at the Kill Devil Hills Town Hall. Two new 2015 historic home designations – Owen Cottage at 2019 S Virginia Dare Trail and the Young/Croarkin Cottage at 201 Random Street will be honored. Participants will be given a map of the properties and they will have from 2 to 5 p.m. to tour those that are open. Signs will be placed in the yards of those available for touring. The event is free and open to the public. The Historic Landmarks Commission was developed to identify preserve and protect the heritage, history, architecture and culture of the Town of Kill Devil Hills. SOUTHERN SHORES – Historic Flat Top Cottages Tour – April 23rd – 1:00 -5:00 pm – the Outer Banks Community Foundation is hosting a self-guided tour that includes world-famous “Flat-Top” Cottages in Southern Shores. Made popular by wildlife artist/developer Frank Stick, most of these beach cottages were built in the 1940’s and 1950’s and have dominated the architecture of Southern Shores. This year’s tour proceeds will once again benefit Flat Top Preservation Fund of the Outer Banks Community Foundation. OUTER BANKS DUALATHLON – A Run Bike Run Event – April 30th – 7:00 am – Nags Head – This is an event for all ages and skill levels. The run course takes you through the quaint ocean side town of South Nags Head, and is set-up against a challenging fast 20 mile ride through the Pea Island Wildlife Refuge which includes the historic Bodie Island Lighthouse and Oregon Inlet.
