Outer Banks December fun begins this with an amazing assortment of activities. POULOS FAMILY CHRISTMAS LIGHTS – Through December 31st – 6:00 pm – Kill Devil Hills (See Directions Below) – The Poulos family has outdone themselves this year – if that is even possible. 2nd ANNUAL FOOD PANTRY HOLIDAY CHEF’S CHALLENGE – December 3rd – 6:00 – 8:30 pm – Hilton Garden Inn, Kitty Hawk – It’s called the Beach Food Pantry Holiday Chefs Challenge, and here’s how it works: Outer Banks chefs and restaurants have 60 minutes to cook a delectable dish using anything that is on a list of items that the Beach Food Pantry has in stock, with one of the items having to be a canned good (vegetable, tuna, beans, and the like). Attendees will then sample each creation and vote on the tastiest, most creative dish. And while making top-notch cuisine from non-perishable goods may sound tricky, you’d be surprised what a good chef can do with canned goods, ground beef, and a rack of spices. Then again, maybe you wouldn’t. After all, we’re talking about restaurants some of the Outer Banks’ best restaurants. Every one of which is as competitive as they are skilled. 1st ANNUAL WINGS OVER WATER ENCORE – A WINTER WEEKEND – December 4th – 6th – For the first time, Wings Over Water has been extended to include one winter weekend of trips in December, called WOW Encore. This is in hopes of increasing the possibility of seeing larger groups of migratory birds and waterfowl. All WOW Encore Programs take place on National Wildlife Refuges only. MANTEO CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS – December 4th – 5th – Manteo – Celebrate Christmas on the OBX with some BIG little town Christmas celebrations including a boat parade, tree lighting, town Christmas Parade and more. The festivities begin December 4th with a Boat Parade at 5:30 pm and the official lighting of the Manteo Town Christmas Tree at 6:00 pm. FIRST FLIGHT MIDDLE’S RUN, RUN, RUDOLPH 5K AND REINDEER DASH – December 12th – 8:30 am – First Flight High School Track, Kill Devil Hills – Come out to support the Student Government Association at First Flight Middle School. 5TH ANNUAL HOLIDAY AT THE MUSEUM – December 12th – Noon – 5:00 PM – Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, Hatteras – FREE TO THE PUBLIC! Children and adults alike will marvel at Winter Wonderland train display by master model builder Charlie Klein. There will be a children’s holiday craft table, letters to Santa (almost certainly to receive a reply from Santa) a professional puppet show, local choral groups, individual performances by local musicians and professional musical entertainment throughout the day. Refreshments will include a variety of hot soups, ham biscuits, holiday cookies and punch. There will be multi-themed fully decorated holiday trees, and shoppers will receive an additional 5 percent off purchases when they bring a donation for the food bank. THE NUTCRACKER – December 12th – 1:00 pm and 7:00 pm – First Flight High School, Kill Devil Hills – Outer Banks Centre for Dance presents Nutcracker ballet performance. HATTERAS VILLAGE CHRISTMAS PARADE – December 12th – 2:00 pm – The parade begins at Teach’s Lair Marina and continues up Highway 12 to the Hatterasman Drive-In. Locals and tourists park along the route and get out to cheer on the floats, fire trucks, bike, horses, motorcycles, emergency and Coast Guard vehicles, bands, and, of course, Santa Claus. After the parade, cookies and cocoa will be served at the Hatteras Community Building for the announcement of winners. This year, the parade sponsor, the Hatteras Village Civic Association, is offering a $750 grand prize for the best float. The second place float will win $300 with $200 going to the third-place entry. DARE COUNTY CANDY DROP – December 13th – 12:30 pm – Dare County Regional Aiport, Manteo – The Berlin Candy Bomber and his crew will be flying off to get Santa Claus to bring him to the Manteo Airport. But before he lands he will drop out 1,000 miniature parachutes with a candy bar attached. All children are invited to attend, catch a candy bar, enjoy cupcakes and other holiday treats and tell Santa what he is to bring for Christmas. Parents are encouraged to tour the inside of the C-54 to view priceless artifacts and recall the amazing effort at the end of World War Two that saved over 2,000,000 civilian lives in the blockaded West Berlin sector and continued on for more than a year.
