The Outer Banks this week in April is going to be amazingly fun!!! From Bike Week and Free National Park entrance to live music and open houses there is far too much to do. The list is long but worth the read so you don’t miss a thing.


First Colony FoundationFIRST COLONY FOUNDATION ARCHEOLOGICAL DIG: “PROJECT DOGWOOD” – April through April 23rd – Roanoke Island – The First Colony Foundation is planning an archeological dig in honor of the Centennial and the 75th anniversary of Fort Raleigh National Historical Site. The focus of the dig will be to further investigate the “Ganz Workshop” site adjacent to the earthen fort. This event will help us to gain knowledge about the park which will help to excite and engage new audiences about the Lost Colony.

FREE ENTRANCE DAYS IN THE NATIONAL PARKS – WRIGHT BROTHERS NATIONAL MEMORIAL – through April 24th – The National Park Service turns 100 years old in 2016 and we want everyone to join the party! On 16 days in 2016, all National Park Service sites that charge an entrance fee will offer free admission to everyone. The fee waiver includes entrance fees, commercial tour fees, and transportation entrance fees. Other fees such as reservation, camping, tours, concession and fees collected by third parties are not included unless stated otherwise.

TOWN OF DUCK- Nature on the Boardwalk with the NC Aquarium – April 21st – 9:00 – 10:30 am – Join North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island educator, Rhana Paris, for a stroll along the Town of Duck’s soundside boardwalk to check out wildlife and local plants. Programs are designed for older audiences, however, if children wish to participate with an adult, suggested age is 9 and up.  Program is free, but space is limited. Call 252.255.1234 to register.  Once registered, plan to wear walking shoes and gather at the First Floor Conference Room at Duck Town Hall, 1200 Duck Road to begin the program.

FRISCO NATIVE AMERICAN MUSEUM – Create a Living Village – April 21st – 24th – 10:00 am – 5:00 pm – Frisco, Hatteras Island – Be a part of creating an interactive, outdoor exhibit at the museum! This is a big project and we need YOUR help to see it through to the end! The main focus for this even is the completion of the outdoor longhouse. No prior experience is needed! We will have volunteers and staff available to help teach the necessary skills. However, these projects are labor intensive and require focus, so they are not suited for young children. We will have some aprons and gloves available on site, but we suggest wearing clothing that can get stained and/or an apron, and medical-style latex or neoprene gloves. Brothers CottageKILL DEVIL HILLS HISTORIC LANDMARKS OPEN HOUSE – April 22nd – 1:00 pm – Kill Devil Hills Town Hall – The self-guided tour of a sampling of the historic homes beginnings with a reception at the Kill Devil Hills Town Hall. Two new 2015 historic home designations – Owen Cottage at 2019 S Virginia Dare Trail and the Young/Croarkin Cottage at 201 Random Street will be honored. Participants will be given a map of the properties and they will have from 2 to 5 p.m. to tour those that are open. Signs will be placed in the yards of those available for touring. The event is free and open to the public. The Historic Landmarks Commission was developed to identify preserve and protect the heritage, history, architecture and culture of the Town of Kill Devil Hills.
