The first week of August on the Outer Banks has started with a bang! It’s hot and we’ve had a couple of amazing thunderstorms but we’ve also been having a lot of fun. We can’t wait for you to join in!

gem art showGEM ART SHOW AND RECEPTION – August 7th – 11:45 am – Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Outer Banks, 831 Herbert Perry Rd, Kitty Hawk – Join us Sunday to view the art, meet the artists and light refreshments. GEM in collaboration with the Artists of the Dare County Arts Council and funded by a grant for the Outer Banks Community Foundation provided art classes to people living with dementia, their family caregivers and community friends. The classes ran for two hours and would include an art project, refreshments and on many occasions live music. Fig Festival_proof33rd ANNUAL OCRACOKE FIG FESTIVAL – August 12th & 13th – The Ocracoke community will celebrate the summer’s fig bounty with a fig cake bake-off, live music, dancing, and more! The third annual Fig Festival in the historic Community Square will feature vendor booths offering fresh figs, fig preserves, local cookbooks, and other fig-tastic items. Local fig expert Chester Lynn will give an informative talk about Ocracoke’s fig history and culture. The showpiece of the Fig Festival is the Fig Cake Bake-Off on Friday afternoon. Everyone is welcome to submit a cake in one or both categories, Traditional or Innovative. Bring your dancing shoes (or bare feet in true Ocracoke-style) for the evening’s fun. The traditional Ocracoke square dance is easy to learn and fun for all ages. Everyone loves to “Dive for the Oyster” and “Dig for the Clam”! On Saturday, join us for the first ever Fig Preserves Tasting Contest. Buy a tasting ticket and vote for your favorite! DARE COUNTY ARTS COUNCIL PRESENTS – 35th New World Festival of the Arts – August 17th & 18th – 10:00 am – 5:00 pm – Manteo waterfront – Bringing 85 world-class artists from across the East Coast to sell and showcase their work, the New World Festival of the Arts returns to the Manteo waterfront.
